| Keep Your Cool |
 |
|
If your electric bill follows the same path
as the summer heat wave (going up and up and
up, with no end in sight) then this program is
for you. There are ways to reduce your
electrical costs
and still keep your cool. Really!

| Juicy Garden Tips |
 |
|
Imagine...a thick slice of home made
bread, toasted. A slice of sharp cheddar
cheese slightly melted. Topped with a thick
juicy slice of home grown tomato, pepper and
lettuce. Pepper and salt? Well, today's
gardeners are bringing back mouthwatering
heirloom plants, and you can too.
|
| Designer Pesticides |
 |
|
Green bugs and grain aphids have voracious
appetites. They destroy a hundred
million dollars worth of crops each year! And the
cure, pesticides, are almost as bad as the
bugs. But maybe not for long. One
scientist is using a supercomputer to develop
designer pesticides that target just these
pests, and only these pests.

| Mad Elephants |
 |
|
Are elephants going crazy? Rampaging
elephants may be suffering from high levels
of stress caused by - you guessed it - us!
Researchers believe that humans may actually
be driving the elephants out of their minds.
|
| Happy Cows |
 |
|
Unlike the cheese commercial that has dairy
cattle discussing the weather while standing
in the middle of a bright green pasture, most
dairy
herds spend their days on cement slabs
(whether or not they discuss the weather is
debatable). This is true, even for cattle
that produce 'organic' milk! However,
that may be about to change due to a proposed
USDA rule.

CONNECT with Nature and Conservation
Efforts in Alaska...
Alaska Oceans Program
is an active participant in the
seafood choices movement. Because all life on
Earth depends on the
oceans, says the group's website, the two
major components of consumer
concerns regarding seafood are ecosystem
health, and the impact of consuming seafood
on human health. The organization supports
credible,
verifiable eco-labeling and health-labeling
systems that educate and inform consumers
about their choices. When all else is equal,
the group concludes, consumers will make
the right choices.
The
Alaska Conservation Foundation builds
strategic leadership and support needed to
take care of Alaska's wildlands, waters,
and wildlife. The organization is at the hub
of the Alaska
environmental network, in touch with both
local and national efforts.
They are working
to build broad-based public support for
environmental protection and for
institutionalizing a sound conservation
ethic through grantmaking to the most
effective grassroots conservation
organizations in Alaska.
The mission of the Alaska
Center for the Environment is to enhance
quality of life by protecting Alaska's wild
places, fostering sustainable communities,
and promoting recreational opportunities. The
natural environment, says the group's
website, is integral to Alaska's history,
politics, and culture. As the state
grows, the group concludes, it is essential
that human development occurs
in harmony with Alaska's natural environment.
