ISLA EARTH RADIO SERIES E-DIGEST
July 2008

Dear Readers,

Welcome to our July issue of the Isla Earth Radio Series e-Digest.

The price of gas seems to be nearly as hot a topic as the weather these days and so we've picked a couple of radio shows on the subject of energy, fuel that is, and some of the surprising opportunities brewing on the horizon these days.

Plus, we'd like to hear from you about what alternative fuel technology you think has the most potential. Send an email to the producer.

Also, don't miss the eco-puzzles this month. There are some fun challenges. You can find the puzzles after the book listing.

  • Liquid Gold
    Thermal Depolymerization

Whether or not offshore drilling becomes a reality, the fact is that fossil fuel is a limited resource. It took millions of years to create the reserves that we access today. There is however a technology that mimics the process. It's called thermal depolymerization. It converts biomass like plants and animal waste into oils. And, a lot faster than it takes to create fossil fuel! Try hours, instead of millennia.

    Better Alternative Fuels
    Grass clippings

Alternative fuels means better, right? Less pollution, cleaner burning, you get the picture. Well, not always. A group of eco-focused scientists recently released a study of "alternative fuels," and there are some surprising polluters on it. The greenest alternative of all? Well, here's a hint: it's green.

    Drinking And Driving?
    Grain

What do you get after you empty a barrel of fermented beer or whiskey (besides a hangover)? Spent grain! And what do you do with this spent grain? Some scientists are looking at how to use it for bioethanol, an alternative fuel.

    Biodiesel Versus Ethanol
    Biodiesel Pump

As oil and gas prices soar, ethanol and biodiesel get more attention as alternatives. But can biofuels really replace conventional fuels? Recent research has focused on both ethanol and biodiesel to see which is better.

A Little Sugar In Your Tank
    Sugar

One of the great success stories in energy self-sufficiency is Brazil. Forty percent of the fuel that runs Brazil's automobiles comes from the country itself, a number rivaling that of some major petroleum-producing nations. But the source of Brazil's power is not oil, but sugar cane.

CONNECT with Nature and Conservation efforts in Tennessee.

The scenic terrain of the Tennessee River Gorge creates a unique diversity of land forms, providing habitats for more than a thousand varieties of plants, ferns, trees, grasses and flowers as well as a rich wildlife population. Many of these are rare or endangered species, such as the herb Mountain Skullcap and birds like the Osprey and Bald Eagle. Dozens of archaeological sites bear evidence of man's presence in the Gorge for at least 10,000 years. The Trust protects the ecological diversity, scenic beauty and historic past of the nationally significant river canyon. They strive to inform the community, especially young people, of the need to preserve the few remaining natural lands.

Cherokee Forest Voices is the leading organization in East Tennessee to address issues related to the management of the Cherokee National Forest. The volunteers are interested in the conservation of this vast resource as a wonderful, wild and natural place. Some are farmers, some teachers, some doctors, some factory workers, some lawyers. Some are hunters, some anglers, some cyclists, some hikers, some photographers. Even though they have different viewpoints, they share a common goal: to promote and encourage the value of allowing nature and natural processes to determine the present and future condition of our national forest lands.
