| Smelly Socks Make Great Mosquito Bait |
 |
|
Phew! Plug your nose! That pile of dirty
smelly
socks reek. But wait! Science might have a
new use
for them, or at least for the odor. Perhaps
someday, you'll even thank those lucky,
stinky, socks for
keeping the mosquitoes away.

| 30 Years Flying into Hurricanes |
 |
|
Thanks to the movie Twister we've
all heard of storm chasers, the folks who
drive after tornadoes to learn more about them.
Well, hurricanes have their counterpart,
pilots who fly straight into the eye of a storm.

| Natural Gas From the Ocean Floor |
 |
|
The ocean floor is full of surprises. Not
only have
previously unknown life forms been
discovered, but
researchers have also been pleasantly
surprised by a
discovery that just might meet our energy
needs for,
well, centuries.

| In Land We Trust |
 |
|
The wide open spaces noted by John Muir are
slowly disappearing; giving way to condos,
homes, and businesses. But some communities have
come together to preserve the wide open
spaces for future generations and so can you.
|
| Child's Photo Proves Hope for Condors |
 |
|
It takes your breath away to see a California
Condor in flight. It's wing span can be more
than nine and a half feet wide. Once a common
sight along the west coast, this amazing
creature was thought to be extinct in the
wild until one day a child took its picture.

"Surveys find that over 80 percent of
Americans agree
with the goals of the environmental movement.
Sadly,
most Americans admit to doing little more
than basic
recycling when it comes to acting on that
disposition.
What is the reason for this great divide between
environmental sentiment in this country and
individual
actions? Author and environmental consultant
Crissy
Trask seeks to answer this question-and solve
the
disparity-with her book It's Easy Being
Green: A
Handbook for Earth-Friendly Living. This
is a day to day
guide with
simple, practical suggestions that anyone can

CONNECT with Nature and Conservation
Efforts in Alabama...
Since 1991, Wild
South has
been a grassroots forest protection
organization that
works to shape responsible public forest
policy, land
management, and environmental protections. Their
mission is to inspire individuals and groups to
preserve, restore, and enjoy the native
ecosystems,
bio-diversity, and cultural heritage of the
South. Wild
South conducts educational and outreach
activities to
motivate the public to protect environmental
resources
and act in defense of the South's native
ecosystems
and biological diversity.
The mission of
Wild Law is to defend the environmental
integrity of
human and natural communities through education,
administrative action, community capacity
building, and
litigation. For every case that sets a
national precedent,
there are a thousand special places that need
enforcement of the precedent. Wild Law
strategically
builds legal capacity for the people and
organizations
defending those places.
The Land Trust of Huntsville and North
Alabama is a
member
supported, not-for-profit organization whose
sole
purpose is to protect the North Alabama
natural lands
and scenic areas. Incorporated in 1987 as
Alabama's
first land trust, over 4,600 acres valued at
over $14
million have been protected. The group maintains
three major mountain preserves and over 30
miles of
trails which are open to the public. The Land
Trust is
dedicated to preserving lands for public use to
enhance recreation, education, conservation and
prosperity in the North Alabama region.
