In brief, elegant essays, the author raises the concept of dirt to new levels in Dirt: The Ecstatic Skin of the Earth. William Bryant Logan, a monthly columnist for the New York Times, looks at soil formation and development. His topics range from quarries and the foundations of cathedrals to graveyards and earthworms, from husbandry in ancient Rome to composting in Florida. Logan pays tribute to the dung beetle as a symbol of renewal; he notes that dirt is the source of many drugs that work against infectious diseases (penicillin, streptomycin). He discusses the many forms of clay and the agricultural practices of John Adams, Thomas Jefferson and the Iroquois. Dirt is a natural history of the soil and our connection with it. -- Reed Business Information, Inc., Amazon.com

CONNECT with Nature and Conservation efforts in New Mexico...

The Forest Guardians seek to protect and restore the native wildlands and wildlife of the American Southwest through fundamental reform of public policies and practices. Their goals are to protect and restore the native biological diversity and watersheds of the American Southwest; educate and enlist citizens to support protection of the forests, rivers, deserts and grasslands of this arid region; advocate for the principles of conservation biology in plans to restore degraded ecosystems and watersheds; enforce and strengthen environmental laws; support communities in efforts to protect their land and to practice and promote sustainable use of natural resources.

The Friends of the Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge work on behalf of birds and wildlife, helping to protect the critically important habitat of the Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge, and helping to educate and inform the public about the value and beauty of all life at the Bosque. Educational events for the public, free of charge, have been a major effort for years. These range from workshops on crane behavior, hummingbirds and migration, to nature walks, photography, watercolor, astronomy, and herpetology. Guided tours on the Refuge are offered each weekend during the winter, some led by Friends. The education of youth about nature and environmental topics is also a major effort, financed by the Friends.
