"Bowling for Rhino"? Who came up with that idea?
But believe it or not, American bowlers have raised
more than two million dollars to protect critically
endangered Javanese rhinos from extinction.

| It's Not Easy, Being Chemically Green |
 |
|
Toilet bowl cleaner, cough medicine, and rubber
duckies have something in common: they're all made
with chemicals. In fact, most of today's products
are made using some chemical process, so state and
federal agencies are asking manufacturers if their
chemistry is green.

| New Technology for Cleaner Fish Farms |
 |
|
What do you get when you cross a suspension bridge
with a fish pen? One company thinks you get a
solution to fish farm pollution! A company called
Oceanspar has invented a poop-proof fish pen. They
call it the "Sea Station" and it looks like a big,
round, cage.

| Car Sharing Gets a Green Light |
 |
|
Public transportation can be a great way to get from
A to B. You can knit, read, work, or even take a
nap—things you could never do driving alone. But for
many, the idea of being stranded at work without
emergency transportation is a downside that keeps
them driving solo. Car sharing, in contrast to
carpooling, is an idea that may be getting more
drivers off the road.

The infamous "pain at the pump" runs much deeper
than our wallets, argues Terry Tamminen, former
Secretary of the California Environmental Protection
Agency and current Special Advisor to California
Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger. Petroleum may power
our cars and heat our homes, but it also contributes
to birth defects and disorders like asthma and
emphysema, not to mention cancer. In Lives Per
Gallon, Tamminen takes a hard look at these and
other health, environmental, and national security
costs hidden in every barrel of oil.

CONNECT with Nature and Conservation Efforts in
West Marin County, California...
Keeping West Marin wild since 1971, the Environmental
Action Committee of West Marin County is
dedicated to
responsible stewardship to ensure that human
activities are in harmony with the area's
irreplaceable wildlife, scenic and other natural
resources. We advocate for restoring native habitats
and species, ecologically sound land management
practices, and conserving rural character to
preserve West Marin's unique natural and cultural
heritage. Member support helps us to continue our
efforts to investigate, advocate and inform to
protect the best of West Marin for the benefit of
future generations.
The Tomales
Bay Institute works to revive and reinvent the
commons, which is the realm of life that belongs to
all of us together, as opposed to separately and
apart. Those at the Institute write books and
articles, issue reports on the state of the commons,
and develop practical ways to protect the commons in
all its many forms, from seeds, genes and earth's
atmosphere, to public spaces, the public domain of
knowledge and the free open spaces of the internet.
In the past these have been seen as separate issues.
Their goal is to show that each are a part of one
big issue.
