  • Creatures in Love
    Black Swan

It's February, and love is in the air–or something like it, anyway. For example, rumor has it that the female black widow spider always devours the male after mating. What do you think?

    Collection Threatens Southern California Lizard
    California Gecko

The bare-foot banded gecko fetches big bucks in some circles, and is, literally, running for it's life!

Living Fossil Discovered in the Flesh
    Laotian Rock Rat

Scientists thought this rat had gone the way of the Dodo bird. Surprise!

New Meters Could Help Conserve Energy
    Meter

One or more of your aging home appliances is probably an energy hog. New technology can bring the offending appliance to light.

    Mobile Urban Farms
    Community Garden

Urban farming is turning vacant lots into viable vegetable gardens. And, at the same time, putting the green back into neighborhoods...in more ways than one.

    Great Lakes Great Water Wars
The Great Lakes are the largest collection of fresh surface water on earth, and more than 40 million Americans and Canadians live in their basin. Will we divert water from the Great Lakes, causing them to end up like Central Asia's Aral Sea, which has lost 90 percent of its surface area and 75 percent of its volume since 1960? Or will we come to see that unregulated water withdrawals are ultimately catastrophic?

These are questions posed by Peter Annin as he presents a fast-paced account of the people and stories behind these upcoming battles. Destined to be the definitive story for the general public as well as policymakers, The Great Lakes Water Wars is a balanced, comprehensive look behind the scenes at the conflicts and compromises that are the past-and future-of this unique resource. –Abstract from Island Press

CONNECT with Nature and Conservation Efforts around Everett, Washington...

Formed in 1970, Pilchuck Audubon Society (PAS) is named after the mountain which is so prominent in the organization's area. Through education, advocacy and community activism, PAS is "committed to bringing people closer to wildlife in order to build a deeper understanding of the powerful links between healthy ecosystems and human beings". The organization further encourages the involvement of its members in efforts to protect the habitat wildlife depends upon for survival.

Stillwaters is an environmental education center in the Carpenter Creek watershed of Kingston, Washington, on the Kitsap Peninsula. The 8 acres of wetlands ecosystem is valued for environmental, aesthetic, and educational benefits. The mission of Stillwaters Environmental Education Center is to "teach, inspire and support individuals and organizations to achieve sustainability in the use of Earth's resources." The group educates about wetlands and water quality issues affecting the environment; they mobilize citizens and agencies to restore and preserve the Carpenter Creek Watershed and surrounding areas; and make the wetlands and watershed areas more accessible to the public and to students. They preserve and provide stewardship for the local ecosystems.

The Adopt-A-Stream Foundation (AASF) was established in 1985 to ensure that Pacific northwest streams continue to provide healthy spawning and rearing habitat for wild salmon, trout and other wildlife. At the same time, the group aims to serve its growing population by providing clean drinking water and a variety of educational programs to teach people to become stewards of their watersheds.
