  • A Miracle in New Jersey
    New Jersey Beach

About 20 years ago, New Jersey's filthy beaches were the butt of jokes. The medical wastes and other garbage that washed up onshore were forcing long and frequent beach closures. Today, the beaches are rarely closed. How did it happen?

    Eco Resolutions
    Resolutions

Another year's gone, and the new year lies ahead. We all know what that means. Yup, New Year's resolutions! How about adding some eco-friendly resolutions to your list? Here are a few that you might consider.

    Canal Restoration Protects Crocodiles
    Baby Crocodiles

The endangered American Crocodile has new 'digs' thanks to the Turkey Point nuclear power plant in south Florida. The team designed the facility with unique cooling ponds, a series of canals around the plant to regulate the reactor's temperature, that are similar to the crocs' natural canals.

    Penguin Commandos
    South African Penguins

Whenever there's an oil spill, the International Fund for Animal Welfare's Emergency Relief Team gets the call. So when a freighter sank off South Africa in 2000, spilling a thousand tons of fuel oil, the team sprung to action and provided care to 20,000 penguins...an operation that turned out to be the world's largest animal rescue.

    Eco-friendly Coffee Cultivation
    Coffee Beans

Hmm...nothing better than the smell of fresh coffee on a cold morning. Thankfully, the re-emergence of traditional farming techniques is lightening the toll that coffee cultivation can have on the environment.

CONNECT with Nature and Conservation Efforts in Portales, New Mexico...

The Western Governors' Association previously worked with landowners and rural communities, including Portales, on conservation strategies for the Lesser Prairie Chicken. Then, in 2005 the WGA created its Sagebrush Conservation Council and is moving forward on several fronts to conserve the Greater Sage Grouse in 11 Western states. More than 65 local working groups have created plans to help sustain bird populations throughout its wide range. WGA is also working with the Western Association of Fish and Wildlife Agencies on a new report that will identify the essential elements needed for effective landscape-scale conservation. The report will focus on organization, leadership and funding and is expected to be released in late December. The report will be available on the WGA Web site at www.westgov.org.
